msu alum; slackware convert

December 2, 2003 &bull technology

I sent the following e-mail to Patrick Volkerding, the founder of Slackware, a few days ago. I haven’t heard back from him, which is to be expected, but I’m still a little bummed. Anyway, I’ll post his reply if I ever get one.

Subject: MSU alum. Slackware convert.

Patrick:
I’m sure you’re busy so I don’t want to take up a lot of your time. For some reason I feel compelled to send you an e-mail and let you know how awesome I think Slackware is and how impressed I was to learn that that you graduated from Moorhead State University.

I’ve been in IT for about four years and have mainly been focused on Microsoft/Windows technology. Like many others, I’ve been dabbling in Linux for quite a bit, but have mainly stuck to RedHat. As of late, I’ve been searching for a new distro and thought I’d check out Slackware just for giggles. To be honest I always avoided Slackware because I’m a Windows guy and, heck, I was a little intimidated by non-RedHat distros. Anyway, I saw the 10-year anniversary announcement on the Slackware homepage and, to my surprise, saw that you had graduated from MSU. I grew up about 70 miles south of Fargo and graduated from MSU in 1998 (with a major in Philosophy and Mass Communications). I had absolutely no idea the creator of Slackware went to MSU. I think that’s so cool. :)

Anyway, I apologize for the odd e-mail. I have been messing around with Slackware 9.1 for a few days and, although the BSD-stuff is a little different from the Sys V stuff I’m used to, I’m loving it. Thanks for taking the time to produce this killer distro. Your efforts are very much appreciated.

take care,
matt swanson
