I’m a bit embarrassed to admit this, but I went to a Bob Edwards book-signing tonight at a little bookstore in La Jolla. It was kind of like a Rolling Stones concert for old people who love NPR. Not that I’m dissing the crowd — I was in its midst, standing in a line that snaked down the sidewalk and around the corner. Anxiously waiting to get inside. The ladies behind me kept chatting nervously, asking each other if there would be enough chairs for everyone. I was thinking the same thing. They wondered aloud if there would be coffee or perhaps cookies. While coffee sounded good, I didn’t care if they had cookies. I was mainly interested in getting a glimpse of the guy I spent most of my mornings with for the last three-plus years. Radio is funny that way.

We finally got inside and I was lucky enough to snag a chair in the back. It was a standing room only. The store manager kept assuring people that there would be enough books for everyone. They would be available after the Mr. Edwards spoke.

The tall baritone came out, some old Kodaks and a couple Polaroids flashed. We knowingly listened to him talk about Edward R. Murrow, as well as his own life as a broadcaster. When the talk was done I survived the rush to the counter, handed my twenty bucks to some skinny red-haired girl, snagged my book and hopped in line. After a quick, “It was a pleasure to meet you,” I got my autograph, wondered what it would be like to be on a book tour, and hit the road.
