January 18, 2005 &bull linux

It’s 11:38pm and I should probably be asleep. But, I’m in the middle of my first Gentoo linux build and am having a hard time traversing the distance between my computer(s) and the bedroom. Two nights ago I scrapped my Slackware 10 box and decided to give Gentoo a shot. Truthfully, I’m not sure I’ll be converted since I’m not too hardcore into “customize/optimize everything,” which seems to be Gentoo’s focus. My main areas of focus when messing around with Linux are 1) to have fun and 2) to learn the fundamentals of Linux so I can apply them at work. I’m not really interested in setting up a system that will act as a desktop replacment since I have a perfectly working Windows system. (And “yes,” I hold the view that in the hands of a competent administrator, Windows can work as well as Linux.) For me Linux is somewhat academic; it allows me to experiment with something I don’t know too much about and rediscover the joys of “computing.” The thrill of getting some pretty basic things working (e.g., a DNS or DHCP server) on Linux is pretty rewarding. Sure, I can do these things in a few minutes on a Windows server, but what’s the fun in that?

Stay tuned for more updates on my Gentoo experiences.
