good weekend

It’s Sunday night and I’m wishing for one more day off before the start of the work week. This weekend was awesome, but, like nearly every weekend, it’s ending too quickly.

On Saturday I rode up Mount Palomar (elevation 5,500 feet) for the first time. I think the actual “Palomar” climb is around 6 miles or something, but you need to climb up a pretty steady 5 miles to get to the base. I kind of lost track of time — one has a tendency to do that when your only thought is how bad your legs hurt — but someone in our group said it takes about an hour and a half to do the whole climb. The times and distances are a bit hazy for me; I’ll have to pay closer attention next time.

Before we hit Mount Palomar we rode up to Lake Wohlford, which itself is a pretty gnarly 2 mile climb. The entire ride was 75 miles; it was simultaneously a horrific and an awesome ride. Horrific because I was hating life during parts of it, wondering why I’m doing this to myself. Awesome because at the end of the tough parts and at the end of the ride, I felt pretty good.

After a nice nap and some good Asian fare, Heidi and I ended the day watching like 5 episodes of the first season of 24, which we’re totally sucked into. All in all, a near perfect day.

Today we also had the privilege of watching Jackson Howes, son of our good friends, Jonathan and Juliane, get baptized. The Howes are great friends and have always been there to help us out with whatever we’ve needed. It was really nice to see them with their “new” family, during something as special as a baptism. I think both Heidi and I felt pretty lucky to be able to be there for them today.

Anyway, we just got done watching a few more episodes of 24. I’m happy to report that Senator Palmer is still alive, but things are looking a little scary at the moment. (For the record, I can’t imagine watching shows like 24 and Lost in “real-time.” Once Heidi and I get on a roll, we end up watching 2-3 episodes during on sitting. How the heck do people only watch one episode a week?)
