I went to Salt Lake City in the beginning of December for a weeklong Suse Linux Enterprise Server 9 (SLES9) training class. I was super-excited for the trip and was looking forward to getting out of the office as much as taking the training class. I felt like I hadn’t left California for 10 years. Every now and then it’s nice to see what’s going on in the real world. Or, at least a place that’s not so cramped. It’s interesting that the first thing I notice when traveling outside of California is how open things seem. I don’t notice how stacked up everything is here until I go someplace where there’s actually open space. I guess Salt Lake was a bit like that.
Backing up a bit, I flew out of San Diego on Sunday evening. I had been to SLC once when I was a kid, but we were passing through and only stopped for lunch. At the time I had no idea why everyone was all dressed up (it was Sunday). Since then, like most everyone else in the world, I’ve heard stories upon stories of how weird it is, etc., etc. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the beginning of my flight didn’t disappoint.
I’m not kidding when I say the ladies on my left and right (and the guy in front of me and the girl across the aisle) whipped out their Book of Mormon before the flight even left the ground. I thought it was interesting because I just started to read Cryptonomicon again, which is a bible of sorts for geeks. Anyway, I have no problems with the “BoM” and folks reading it. But, it was a bit distracting when all I could hear in my mind (over and over) was, “Maybe it is all true….”
Well, I don’t think I was able to see enough of SLC to report how true the stories are. But, I can say that finding a beer or glass of wine to have with your meal isn’t a problem. Finding a good cup of coffee, though? A little harder. (SLC — the only place in the world that doesn’t have a Starbucks on every corner.)
Overall, Salt Lake wasn’t that bad. Sure, it was cold and snowy and I wasn’t able to enjoy my morning Starbucks, but it was easy to get around and the Suse class was good.
