cracklin’ rosie

Per our Christmas letter (sorry if we missed you on the mailing list) we saw Neil Diamond in concert on December 21st. Heidi’s former boss has a contact at the ticket office, which we exploited for outrageously good tickets (10 rows back, dead center). I actually saw the Jewish Elvis in Fargo in 1996 and this show was pretty similar. (I guess he’s been playing with the same band for 30 years.) However, the kick-ass seats, the fact it was kicking off a much needed week+ vacation, and being with my sweetheart, made it a better show than the one I saw in Fargo.

Getting out of the parking lot after the show was a minor nightmare. I kept envisioning the aerial view of things looked like a train wreck with boxcars (or just cars, in this case) strewn everywhere. As we were sitting there, waiting to move, some guy, who was promoting his Neil Diamond tribute band, walked up and gave us a business card. The name of the band was “Brother Love.” I was this close to saying Heidi and I were in a Neil Diamond tribute band ourselves and we didn’t want to take his card since he was a competitor “of sorts.” But, I couldn’t think of a cool band name so I didn’t say anything. As we were driving out of the parking lot I thought “Cracklin’ Rosie” would have been a pretty funny name. But, too late.

Anyway, a great show. If you get a chance check out his new album, 12 Songs, which is actually pretty good. I’ve heard it’s much better than the other stuff he’s done over the last years. (I haven’t really heard anything aside from his “classics” so I can’t really comment.)
