Tech Ed 2006, day 4

June 15, 2006 &bull uncategorized

This year’s TechEd “Thursday night party” was at Fenway park. The Red Sox were out of town (incidentally getting beat in Minnesota) so Microsoft “rented” the entire ballpark for the night. We had access to the entire park and were even able to go onto the field and walk around it on the warning track. It was a pretty unbelievable experience. There’s so much history at Fenway and it’s so old (I believe it was built in 1912) that you can’t help but get caught up in being there, even if you aren’t a baseball fan. Having the entire run of the place was incredible. When I have a minute I’ll post some of my pictures on Flickr.

Later in the evening Train played a concert, which was pretty good. The entire night was an “all you can eat/drink” for free. Needless to say, most folks (present company included) were having a pretty good time. After the ballpark/concert a coworker and I stopped at Bukowski Tavern for a night-cap.

Here are the sessions I took today:

SVR325 Deploying and Managing a Windows-Based High-Performance Compute Cluster
DAT332 SQL Server 2005: Replication
SVR329 Active Directory Disaster Recovery Part 1 of 2
SVR331 Active Directory Disaster Recovery Part 2 of 2
CLI308 Windows Vista: Networking, Firewall, and IPsec Improvements

The best sessions of the day were the two on AD disaster recovery. The session was given by the folks from Kimberry Associates. I took a session from them either in San Diego or Dallas (can’t remember) and, like that previous session, they were great. Their demos are always very organized and the content is presented in a very clear manner. It’s cool when you get the chance to hear bona-fide experts talk about a product you use every day.

Steve Riley presented some information on upcoming Vista security/networking changes. This was a pretty good talk with a lot of good info. Riley is always entertaining and informative so it’s hard to not get something out of his presentations. The day’s first two sessions were OK. The Compute Cluster talk was better than the SQL replication presentation, which was a bit dry.
