2006 in review

December 29, 2006 &bull uncategorized

I love this time of year for so many reasons. Of course, there’s the holiday cheer and the simple fact that most people are friendlier and, for the most part, in a pretty good mood. Aside from that stuff, it’s always been fun for me because my family has a bunch of birthdays around the holidays. My sister’s is 12/17, my mom’s is 12/21, and mine is 12/22. So, the last 2 weeks of December are basically an orgy of holiday cheer, well-wishes, presents, and good feelings. In addition to this, I almost always have significant time off of work, which allows me to reflect on the past year and plan ahead for the upcoming one. The advent of blogs and online media have made for a ton of great reading, as I love year-end reviews. And if you look hard enough, you can find a top ten, year-end list for just about anything. Movies, music, books, TV shows, gadgets, etc., etc. Since I’m not always the most up-to-speed on pop culture, I’m usually able to harvest these lists for cool stuff I missed during the year. Plus, I just think it’s great that there’s at least some degree of reflection going on by all sorts of people — something that doesn’t seem to happen much in today’s world. It makes you wish there were more of it during the year and not just at the end of it.

For the past few years I’ve tried to do my part and have compiled a list of stuff I enjoyed throughout the previous year. I always insert the caveat that some, if not most, of the stuff on my list wasn’t actualy created in the previous year. It’s more of a “stuff I enjoyed during the year” list. I know, I know, that’s kind of lame. Perhaps one year I’ll be able to have a proper “year in review” list, but until my inner hipster has a chance to stay up-to-speed with what’s happening in the world, we’ll just have to live with an “experience” list.
