A couple of weeks ago I rode my first double century of the season. While I probably could have used a some more training, I felt like I was prepared for the ride. The first 100 miles seemed a lot harder than the second 100 — probably due to a strong headwind as we were coming down the coast. There was more climbing in the second part of the ride, but I prefer that over the wind. This was the first double where I had to ride in the dark (2 hours), but that didn’t bother me. The new NiteRider HID light I picked up earlier this year was a lifesaver. Having a good light makes such a big difference.
I’m planning on doing five doubles this year, which is something I’ve never done before. It feels good to have the first one done, but I’m having a hard time figuring out how to train for the next one, which is at the end of March. My strategy is try to maintain my fitness level and not go overboard and get burned out for the remaining rides. For now I’m going to try to maintain 130-150 miles a week. Fortunately I’ve done the next ride (Solvang) the last two years so I know what to expect. It’s probably one of the fastest and easiest doubles in SoCal. I love the route and the scenery is great so I’m really looking forward to it. I’ll write up another post-ride report afterwards.
