heartbreak [3 of 5]

I rode the Heartbreak double century on Saturday. It’s probably one of the hardest rides I’ve ever done. But, at the same time, it’s probably one of the best because the route is so good. There’s over 15,000 feet of climbing and, as such, you spend a lot of time going up. But, you’re going up on roads that make you feel like you’re in Big Sky Country rather than a few miles from LA. And like I always say, any time you can spend hours on smooth roads with no lines and no cars is time well spent.

With that said, this ride is a son-of-a-bitch. Last year it kicked my ass on the last King of the Mountains stage (it was sooo windy and, unlike this year, super cold). It was hot this year — probably between 90-100 degrees at its hotest point. But, I kept my head down, maintained a steady pace, and finished in a little under 14:30.
