Heidi and I flew to New York a couple Thursdays ago for Ryan and Kristen’s wedding. (We both went to college with Ryan; Kristen is the New Yorker he fell in love with.) I’m trying to get into the habit of journaling my travels in a Moleskine, which I did for this trip. I feel like I’m repeating myself a bit by writing about the trip again, but since no once has actually read my hand-written account, I guess I’m the only one who will complain.
It was an interesting trip on a number of fronts. Heidi got really sick on Wednesday night and was throwing up until midnight or so. She felt good enough at 5:00am, though, to go to the airport and sit on a plane for 5 hours. I guess “good enough” is somewhat relative, however. She started throwing up again during the cab ride from JFK to NYU. I felt really bad for her — puking at home in your own toilet is bad enough. Having to aim it into a little bag in the back of a New York cab is a major bummer. With some divine guidance we made it to the “hostel,” which is what I was calling the place where we were staying. (Ryan and Kristen hooked us up with a cool little dorm suite, which didn’t cost us anything. Ryan stayed in one of the suites so it was nice to be able to spend some extra time with him.)
After we got to the hostel Heidi slept the rest of the afternoon/evening/night and I went out for a bit with Ryan and Kristen. We walked around and enjoyed pizza, cupcakes, and even a couple beers. We had a nice time catching up and enjoying the city. God, I love New York.
Heidi was a new woman on Friday morning. She had regained her color and was feeling a lot better. We made our way to the Time Warner building and did a little shopping. (BTW, we saw Ray Wise on the subway. I was so proud of myself for remembering right away that he was in Twin Peaks. Having that in the back of my mind for the entire weekend would have completely wrecked my trip.) We enjoyed Whole Foods for lunch (yes, we the kind of people who will travel across Manhattan in order to eat at a huge Whole Foods) and did some shopping afterwards.
That night we ate at Pure Food and Wine, which was about 3 blocks from where we were staying. Raw Food, Real World was our first raw vegan “cook” book so it was cool to eat at the author’s restaurant. After an awesome meal we went to a Broadway show called Inherit the Wind. Seeing a Broadway show with real stars is always a surreal experience and this one was doubly so. Christopher Plummer and Brian Dennehy were so good it was unbelievable. Whenever we go to New York we try to see a show and it’s always so worth it.
We got up early the next morning and went to Central Park with Ryan and a few of his friends to run in the Healthy Kidney 10K. It was the first organized run Heidi and I had ever done. (In fact, I think it was the longest run I had ever done.) I’m not sure if there’s anything cooler than running through Central Park on a spring morning with your sweatheart, your buddy, and 5000 other people. It was a pretty neat experience.
After the run we found time for a short nap before heading to the wedding, which was really nice. It’s always awesome when two great people find each other and are totally in love. There were a lot of nice personal messages from the families. We had a good time visiting with Ryan’s parents and some of his other friends who we have gotten to know during our trips to NYC in the past. The reception was at the Beekman Tower Hotel, which was very cool. It was at the top of the tower, which had a 360 degree view of the city. We drank, ate, danced, visited, and had a good time celebrating with Ryan and Kristen. What a great wedding.
We left town early the next morning and were back in San Diego in the afternoon. I can’t wait to go back.
