I’ve had an Ironman training “kick-off” post in my draft bucket for about three weeks. For some lame reason I couldn’t pull together the the 15 minutes it was going to take to finish it and get it online. Just as I was about to get serious and hammer it out, Heidi’s aunt gave her a good suggestion: why don’t we both blog about our Ironman training? We could then keep everyone who’s donated money to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network updated on what we’re doing. Sounded like an awesome idea. But, you might be wondering what this whole “donating money” thing is about. So, let me back up.

Over the holiday break Heidi and I finalized our plans to try to turn our first Ironman experience into something more than just another event. (I’m not sure an Ironman can ever be considered “just another event,” but you know what I mean.) Doing a full Ironman seemed like a good excuse to find a good cause and raise some money for it. And, if the cause really meant something to us, it might even provide inspiration when we’re hitting a training wall or doubting ourselves during the actual event.

Two years ago Heidi lost her dad, Doug, to pancreatic cancer. And a year ago her uncle, Jeff, died from it as well. So, unfortunately, pancreatic cancer has been on our minds a lot over the last few years. Selecting this for our cause was a no-brainer.

Heidi got the donation site set up and lots of people have already donated money. So much that we’ve actually surpassed our original goal. But that doesn’t mean you still can’t donate. Pancreatic cancer has one of the highest fatality rates of all cancers and is the fourth highest cancer killer in the United States among both men and women. We need all the help we can get to help fight this deadly disease.

Look for some Ironman updates from Heidi and me in the near future.
